Why Dive This Site?
Why Dive This Site?
One of the Area’s Most Beautiful Coral Gardens
The shallow northern coral garden is the defining attraction of Abu Sail, with extensive and exceptionally beautiful coral formations.
Unique Shore Entry Through a Reef Opening and Short Cave
Shore access leads to a small opening in the reef and a short, roofed passage. Its suitability must be assessed locally; divers should not assume that a short passage is free of overhead-environment risks.
Spectacular Mushroom-Shaped Coral
A huge mushroom-shaped coral formation on the southern reef is one of the site’s defining underwater landmarks.
Dramatic Deep-Water Drop-Off
The mushroom-shaped coral formation extends from approximately 20 m towards 60 m. These deeper sections describe the underwater topography, not a recreational dive route.
Rich Hard and Soft Coral
The reef is covered in rich hard and soft corals, supporting abundant reef life and cleaning stations.
Excellent Underwater Photography Potential
The coral garden, mushroom-shaped coral and deep blue-water scenery make Abu Sail an excellent site for underwater photography.

Dive Description
Abu Sail is a shore-diving site south of Marsa Alam. The dive begins from shore, with a relatively long walk over uneven terrain to reach the water. Once at the reef, the diver enters through a small opening in the reef and passes through a short cave/coral passage before emerging onto the reef system. This is not a technical cave dive — the short passage is part of the natural entry. After the cave, the diver reaches the main reef and the spectacular coral garden. The northern, shallow side features an extensive and exceptionally beautiful coral garden. The southern, outside section has a coral-encrusted wall and the huge mushroom-shaped coral formation. Below and around the mushroom-shaped coral, the reef drops dramatically into deep water, with the deep section reaching 60+ m as shown on the approved Dive Map. The general current direction shown on the map runs from north to south, with current generally described as low to mild. There is no single fixed route — the guide chooses the actual profile according to conditions, diver level and objectives.
Dive Profiles & Routes
The Coral Garden: Shallow northern reef area with extensive hard and soft coral formations. Excellent for observation and photography. Depth varies with the exact route.
The Southern Reef & Wall: Coral-encrusted wall with a deeper, exposed character. Appropriate experience required depending on depth and conditions.
The Mushroom-Shaped Coral & Deep Drop-Off: A large mushroom-shaped coral formation begins around 20 m and extends towards 60 m. The formation’s full depth is not a recreational dive profile. Divers observe suitable sections within their training, planned depth and no-decompression limits; the route is not fixed.
Practical Details

Choosing your route and planning the visit
Published descriptions under the name Abu Sail are inconsistent: some describe a sandy bay, while others describe a reef opening, a northern coral garden and a deeper southern mushroom-shaped block. This page retains the original project map. Before booking, have the operator confirm the precise location, entry and intended sector against that map. Do not infer that a shallow-water qualification makes the outer block suitable. Agree an open-water route appropriate to your training; a passage or overhead environment needs a separate assessment and is never an obligatory part of the visit.
Location & How to Get There
Abu Sail is located north of Marsa Alam, south of Port Ghalib. Access is from shore. The beach is not immediately adjacent to the actual reef entry — expect a walk over uneven, rough terrain. Appropriate footwear or booties are recommended for the shore approach.

This map is an illustrative site guide for Abu Sail, not a surveyed navigation chart or a fixed dive route. It depicts the shore entry, roofed reef passage, coral garden, mushroom-shaped coral and deeper southern reef. Depth markings describe the site’s topography and must not be interpreted as a recommended dive depth. The passage, entry and actual route must be assessed locally.

Site-Specific Features
Site-Specific Features
The Blue Coral Garden
The coral garden is the defining attraction of Abu Sail. The shallow northern section contains extensive and exceptionally beautiful hard and soft coral formations. This is what makes Abu Sail different from a generic shore dive — the quality and extent of the coral garden are the principal reason divers visit the site.
The Mushroom-Shaped Coral
A huge mushroom-shaped coral formation stands on the southern, outside section of the reef. It is richly covered with soft corals and marine life, and is one of Abu Sail’s defining underwater landmarks. The formation begins around 20 m and extends towards 60 m. This describes the formation’s underwater extent, not a recreational dive route or recommended maximum depth.
The Cave Entry
Shore access leads to a small opening in the reef and a short, roofed passage towards the main reef. Local operators describe this as an established entry, but its short length alone does not establish that it is suitable for every certified diver. The operator must assess the passage’s actual configuration, visibility, exits and sea conditions, together with the group’s training and equipment. Do not enter other cavities or overhead areas.
Conditions & Currents
Current at Abu Sail is generally described as low, but conditions can vary, particularly on exposed reef sections. No prevailing current direction has been independently established for the site. Visibility is often around 20–30 m but depends on sea conditions. The operator assesses the entry, reef conditions and appropriate route on the day.
Who Is This Site For?
Abu Sail is suitable for certified divers. The shallow coral-garden areas are accessible to divers with appropriate certification when conditions and guide assessment make them appropriate. Divers interested in coral gardens and underwater photographers will find rich subjects. Experienced divers wanting deeper reef scenery can explore the southern wall and the area around the mushroom-shaped coral, where the reef drops toward 60+ m — these deeper and more exposed sections require appropriate experience and depth certification. Not every part of the site is suitable for every certification level. The guide determines the plan based on conditions and the group.

Wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed. These are wild animals in their natural habitat.
Wildlife Etiquette
DO: Maintain neutral buoyancy. Observe animals without chasing. Protect coral. Follow the guide. Maintain appropriate distance. Allow animals to choose their direction.
DO NOT: Touch coral. Stand on reef. Touch wildlife. Chase turtles, sharks or rays. Block or handle animals. Disturb cleaning stations.
These guidelines are essential for responsible diving at Abu Sail — respecting the reef and its wildlife is the only way to keep it healthy.
When to Dive
Abu Sail can be dived year-round, with conditions and visibility varying with weather and sea state. No specific seasonal wildlife pattern is established for this site. Local conditions should be assessed by the guide on the day.
Shore Diving
Abu Sail is a shore dive. The beach is not immediately adjacent to the actual reef entry — expect a walk over uneven, rough terrain. Appropriate footwear or booties are recommended for the shore approach. At the reef, access is through a small opening and a short, roofed passage. The operator must assess whether the passage is suitable for the group under the conditions on the day.
Underwater Photography
Abu Sail is an excellent site for underwater photography. The coral garden is the principal visual attraction and the main reason photographers visit the site.
For wide-angle work, the coral garden, mushroom-shaped coral, reef walls and deep blue-water scenery are the primary subjects. The extensive hard and soft coral formations provide rich compositions, and the dramatic drop-off into deep blue water creates striking wide-angle opportunities.
For macro, the reef supports scorpionfish, stonefish, crocodilefish, cleaning stations and other reef life. Patient, slow observation produces better results than active pursuit.
Responsible photography is essential. Maintain excellent buoyancy at all times. Never touch coral. Avoid resting on the reef. Do not chase marine life. Use the reef shape and blue water for wide-angle compositions. Use patience for smaller subjects. The goal is to photograph behaviour as it unfolds naturally.
Safety & Practical Information
Shore access requires a walk over uneven terrain; appropriate footwear or booties are recommended. Assess sea conditions before entering and follow the operator’s briefing. The short, roofed reef passage must be assessed for its actual configuration, visibility, exits and suitability for the group’s training and equipment; do not assume it is risk-free because it is short. Do not enter other cavities or overhead areas. Stay within your certification, training, gas supply and planned depth limits. The mushroom-shaped coral formation extends towards 60 m, but this is not a recreational dive depth. Maintain good buoyancy, avoid contact with coral and respect marine life.
